Actually, both Ginsberg and Kardashian have security and agency, although they express it in very different ways.

Ruth’s husband was a strong and caring advocate for her feminist work, even standing by her side and putting his own career on the line to support the shift that needed to happen. Security + agency.

Kim Kardashian (and everyone has a different viewpoint about her) has built a multi-million dollar brand for herself and her child, regardless of if a man in her life supports her. She also expresses herself as she pleases, there is probably no celebrity who receives more criticism, (except the Royal family) and yet, she strides forward in her own defined version of femininity. I tend to lean towards more Ruth-like expression, but acknowledging that Kim has security + agency as well.

Actually, feminine expression is no longer a polarity or choice between the good girl and the slut. That’s unfortunately how men have defined our roles for thousands of years, but we are much more nuanced.

Just as men are not either the masochistic alpha or the geeky wimpy beta (Geeky can be a real turn-on, by the way). In certain situations men express certain characteristics and different characteristics in others. Plus, each person will change and grow during their life.

I invite us to embrace the nuance rather than continuing to promote stereotypes…
