Actually, they do. Once a particular scientific theory gains popularity and therefore funding, anyone who dares to question or promotes an alternative theory is often laughed out of conferences, locked out of opportunities and ostracized. Scientists by the whole are just as elitist as those in fundamental religions.
Look at the history of scientific discovery, those who propose something new were ridiculed, even killed.
What often disturbs spiritual people about atheism (and I’ve been both) is the air of superiority. Like those who believe in metaphysical occurrences are somehow naive, manipulated children like your neice, dreaming of unicorns, while atheists and scientists are ‘adults’ getting on with the serious questions of life.
Anyone who studies science, history and a number of other disciplines from childhood through college, will certainly be indoctrinated as well into the current thinking of our time.
