And, I think it’s important to point out that not everyone who leaves a dissenting viewpoint to an article is just out there looking for a fight. I love nothing more than to praise great writing and perspectives, uplift my colleagues. However, in the past 24 hours I read two articles to which I decided to respond in not a flattering, but still professional, manner. One was touting a particular cultural tradition from a tribe in Africa whose husbands ‘loan’ their wife to guests for sex just like providing food or lodging, and routinely marry girls as young as 10 years old. My response was that the author has a responsibility to call out a culture of rape and child abuse, but didn’t, instead he made a joke about how often he might be able to visit. Humor is awesome, but some things are not funny, at any time, in any place.
