As a self-help writer and coach for six years, I understand people’s frustrations, especially when some in our field portray things as ‘easy’ or ‘quick’. Not much of life is like that, doing your inner work is the hardest journey I’ve ever taken. Plus, everyone starts from a different place, mainly because of inequitable social systems. However, there is nothing wrong with wanting to help people who are struggling, if your motivation is to be of service. There is nothing wrong with authentically and vulnerably sharing your personal experience, provided you are clear that it’s just that, your experience. It’s not the end-all, be-all solution for everyone and people should take what resonates and leave the rest. And, there is nothing wrong with making a livable wage as a self help writer or coach, as long as you are providing the value you promise - any more than it’s wrong to be a dentist and make money, or a truck driver. Myself, I very much struggle with the fact that our capitalist system is rigged against most people, yet, I still have to make a living and I prefer doing what I love (instead of the corporate grind I struggled through for 25 years). If a past coach, author or therapist hurt you, perhaps that’s a place to contemplate…
