Balancing my sensitivity (HSP) with high sensation seeking (HSS)

No matter where I’ve lived (and I’ve resided in quite a few places), a strong call for adventure always seems to be bubbling up inside of me. While I appreciate and even need a sense of security, my inner gypsy is always present. She wants to play, travel and explore.

Ironically, I seem to attract people in my life, over and over, who are very rooted to a specific location. They have close ties to family, community or a certain home. It’s said we seek out that which is lacking within. Indeed.

So, why have I always felt a push — pull between being settled into a routine and having complete freedom?

If I look back, it seems to originate in childhood, because what doesn’t? One of my parents has always been drawn to create a solid home foundation, while the other prefers to live more freely. I appreciate both lifestyles and yet my dual nature has often been confusing.

Which do I choose and when?

A light bulb switched on several years ago when I learned about the temperament trait called high sensation seeker or HSS. This is a person who is biologically wired to seek out new and novel experiences. Travel to new places, meet new people, try new food, challenge themselves with novel activities.
