Being a highly sensitive role model in the corporate world
For those working in a corporate environment as a sensitive person, I understand both the draws and the challenges.
A steady salary, benefits, some cool coworkers and clients and having a regular work schedule are all a bonus. Yet, as sensitive people, we can also be overwhelmed by open plan offices with too much noise and stimulation, superficial politics, lackadaisical or harsh leadership and doing work devoid of meaning.
I’ve experienced it all as an employee for a national nonprofit organization, an international technology retailer and the largest landscape company in the United States. I’ve also worked for several small businesses. Believe me, the culture and politics can be either just as challenging or just as supportive.
At almost every corporate job, I wondered, what the hell am I doing here?
Several years ago, I made a pact to get out. To leave behind what I then saw as a strong push for unsustainable growth, to make profit margins at all cost (usually through the burnout of their employees or shorting customers). I had to work two jobs for three years, but I finally broke free.
