Do you ever have a ‘conversation dress rehearsal’?
Why talking to yourself is beneficial…
Have you ever found yourself running a dialogue through your mind before you have it with another person? Especially, if the topic is emotionally charged or very important to you?
I call this a conversation dress rehearsal.
Just like in a theatre production, it provides you with the opportunity to observe the script and the players in action. You get to hear inside your mind or even out loud what would come out of your mouth if you were to begin speaking right now. It’s a monologue, of sorts.
You begin by responding with what’s inside of you and roll the scene forward from there. Should I say this? How would they respond? Or what if I said that instead, would it change things?
A conversation dress rehearsal answers some key questions:
- Where are you emotionally?
- Are you still triggered?
- Do you still need to wait a bit, breathe, calm down?
- Does it sound like blaming? You did this, you made me feel like that…
