Empaths: what to do when you get attacked online
After running a spiritual business for the past five years, I can’t count the number of times I’ve been attacked by someone on social media. When I use the word attacked, I’m referring to hateful, nasty, sexist, abusive and threatening comments.
I’ve heard it all — how naïve I am, thinking that the world should be a safe, loving, and equitable space. I’ve been told that being an empath is an illusion, it’s only a science fiction character. I’ve been told to F off with my progressive beliefs, I’ve been called a bitch, a communist and other insults.
At first, being present to harsh behavior from others, was devastating. Especially since like many empaths, I had many bullying experiences from childhood to unpack. Comments like these made me want to delete my social media apps and curl up at home. Nope, spiritual leadership is not for me. I’m too exposed, it’s too dangerous, and too hard on my heart.
Now, I take a completely different approach.
Like this morning, when I responded to a hateful, personal attack with the following phrase, ‘If it makes you feel better to bully and be nasty to others, by all means. But know that your opinion of me, of my profession, and my beliefs doesn’t matter one iota. I am proud of who I am, and you do not get to define me. By the way, I’m working on a future that’s beneficial to everyone, including you — you’re welcome.’
