Equal results are different than ‘equal opportunity’

Recently, I watched the replay of Alicia Key’s ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing’ which debuted during the NFL Super Bowl. Both a tribute and rallying cry to continue to move our country and world forward, to eliminate racism in all forms. But we aren’t there yet — not even close.

As you can imagine, the comments below this video on YouTube ranged from solidarity! to hate-filled excrement:

‘Separate anthem for black people in the USA? When are they going to have their own separate country?’

‘Not one white kid was in that video. Yep, racist do exist.’

‘I guess black folks got special privileges they get their own national anthem.’

I could go on about the white fragility that showed up and some surprising comments from people of color as well. We live in one of the most divisive times in American history — it gets down and dirty in the public square.

The thread I jumped onto was when one racist stated, ‘It’s a shame that Africans in America couldn’t just imitate the Asians and become functional. They need to stop crying about why they’re so poor, oppressed and harassed by cops.’

Damn.

It’s on now.
