Feeling strong emotions never killed anyone…

Or, did they?

During a recent conversation with a good friend, I told him, ‘It’s okay to feel, having strong emotions never killed anyone.’ When he responded with a highly skeptical look, I stepped back to contemplate.

As a highly sensitive person, an empath and INFJ (strong feeler personality type), emotions have played a huge role in how I navigate my life. First, scientific research shows as a sensitive person, my brain is innately wired to experience a broader range of emotional responses than most people. The highs are higher, and the lows are lower. This is simply how 25% of all human beings are wired since birth.

As an empath, I also can sense other people’s emotional states inside of me, as if they were my feelings. So, I’ve not only had my own wide range of emotionality, but an extra layer of others. It’s still a work in progress to identify where my energetic boundaries end and another person begins.

But let’s get back to this idea that feeling strong emotions never killed anyone. What I meant is that suppressing emotions leads directly to increased anxiety and problems with physical and mental health.

Trying to hold back, hold back, hold back what wants to be expressed almost always results in an emotional volcano. Anger lava spewing out all over…
