How to run a conscious business when you don’t believe in capitalism

I hadn’t really stopped to ponder the economic system I’ve been participating in since birth. It’s like a swimming fish, it doesn’t think about the water — it simply takes in oxygen from its surroundings because that’s what fish do.

How do you critique an existing system, one you witness exploiting so many people, while also being an active participant in said system? How am I not a complete and utter hypocrite?

First, no economic system is inherently bad. It depends on how the people with access to resources and decision-making, choose to use it.

Capitalism, as defined by Dictionary.com, is an economic and political system in which a country’s trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state.

The key phrase is ‘for profit’, versus ‘for the greatest good’. It clearly articulates the driving force of a capitalist structure is to generate more money coming in than is spent out. Essentially, our entire economic and political system is built upon a model of continuous growth.

As a spiritual teacher and mentor, I love continuous growth. When you’re on a strong spiritual path, there’s always something new to discover within yourself. A fresh golden nugget, leading to inner aha! moments.
