I appreciate how hard and healing this must have been to write. I spent twenty years in a marriage with a husband who was an undiagnosed schizophrenic. I covered for his dysfunction, called the police several times and almost died by his hands before I summoned the courage and overcame the guilt to leave and chose me. A lot of deep healing continues to take place and I often wonder what’s happened to him, as he wasn’t capable of working, but I also wasn’t capable of being a full time caregiver. We married at age 19 and the symptoms didn’t appear until almost ten years later, so of course you try to be supportive and get him help, which he didn’t want because I was the problem, the therapist was the problem, his supervisor at work had installed cameras in our backyard and was watching us, etc. It was devastating to see someone so intelligent, artistically talented devolve with no support.
