I appreciate your citation of the song where the term ‘stay woke’ was mentioned (and of course a nod to appropriation), but the origins of this phrase go back much further within the spirituality movement, perhaps hundreds of years. Having an ‘awakening’ was the realization that we are part of something so much larger than ourselves. A wake up call to cease navel gazing, face your tendency to operate primarily from ego, develop a sense of compassion for the journey others are on, and try to grasp that while we all look different on the outside, that spiritually, everything is a holographic Universe. What’s reflected in one, is reflected in all. Being ‘woke’ is a misnomer, insinuating that someone has achieved a higher state of awareness and enlightenment. ‘Awakening’ would be more accurate, because as we have difficult life experiences, hopefully, we come to a deeper and deeper understanding of ourselves, our 100% responsibility for our thoughts, words and actions. Woke is virtue signaling, awakening is a life long process…
