I have a very push-pull relationship to the military. Most of the men in my family served and yet, fundamentally I feel that war is wrong and 99% of the time in recent decades is not a self defense maneuver, but instead a financial and political one. I am diametrically opposed to our government treating service members as if they are expendable, especially when they come home physically, mentally and emotionally wounded. The sheer number of veterans’ organizations on tv asking for money, the number of military families lined up at food banks, tells me everything I need to know about how our government uses and abuses service members. So I am pro-veterans and anti-military and anti-war. That makes it very difficult for me to thank anyone for their service when I feel they shouldn’t have been put in that position in the first place.
