I noticed a similar dialogue going on within many different marginalized groups - must someone who is trans be focused specifically on trans rights? Must a black candidate be primarily focused on black rights? Must every woman in our legislature be voting in favor of broader rights for women? That would be great, but there are examples all over the place where people make decisions that are seemingly antithetical to their well being or the well being of others. Most often, I’ve seen the underlying reasons be about money or power. Someone will vote or run for office based on the potential financial return for self vs. what would be good for everyone in the long run. I suppose greed is universal...
