I think the reason racist, homophobic and sexist statements are cancelled (and should be) so quickly now, is they represent actual danger to those to whom they refer. Death even. While I agree that humans are nuanced creatures, should we allow someone of influence, or anyone for that matter, to persuade that these sayings are okay, as long as you have an ‘impulsive’ personality? Well that explains about 1/3 of racist Americans for sure. When words can actually cause damage to others, we have to say no.
