I was 20 when this album came out so have a slightly different take on JLP. What I understood about the story was that Alanis’ childhood was stifled and beige and yet, there was always a wild, angry girl (and then woman) inside her, which her music was a channel to release. I resonated completely as a high school straight A honor roll student who never did the wrong thing, who then graduated and became an art school, flannel wearing, pot smoking rebel.

She was describing what it means to release her inner Lilith after you’ve been playing the role of Eve for so long. The joy, shame, angst, disruption to your outer world and connection to a part of yourself you’ve previously only dared to secretly admire in others. Jagged Little Pill is not only good, but was the soundtrack for those who came out of the materialistic, self-absorbed, shoulder pad wearing, pastel 80s into GRUNGE baby!
