I'm always skeptical when people begin blaming the fact that someone is poor solely on their bad choices or behavior. The official poverty rate in the United States in 2020 was 11.4 percent (37.2 million people), however. only 21 million Americans have an addiction, so according to your theory, there are 16 million Americans who are living in poverty not due to their 'bad' choices. Current research is demonstrating that addiction is a complex issue and it is a disease. There are a myriad of reasons people abuse substances and most of them aren't because they suck at decision-making. Addictions are a cry for help, the need to heal trauma, from the pressures of our modern society, and genetics play a huge part. Plus 90% of people with an addiction began using alcohol and drugs before they were 18, so this was before they were able to be self-reliant and self-determining. I am so weary of people blaming poverty on poor people, when they don't acknowledge inequitable systems, lack of educational and career opportunities and how hard it is to lift yourself out of poverty, with little to no resources, unless someone is willing to give you a hand up. Let's start talking about the policies in our government, how those who are more economically fortunate, become so on the backs of the poor and why we have a growing number of billionaires and even a few trillionaires, while people sleep in the streets and don't have a meal. By the way, unhealthy food is a lot cheaper than organic, non-GMO fresh food. Eating healthy is currently a privilege...
