Interpreting the Bible in this way is spiritual abuse. It sets up deep shame and guilt in its followers that they must stay in an unhealthy marriage, because otherwise they are sinning. This is what led me, and many other women like me, to stay with an abusive husband, because I was told I made a vow ‘til death so us part.’ As a therapist, you should not be sharing your religious beliefs with clients, especially if they are dated and dysfunctional.
