My business is a model for the new work paradigm
As I engaged in my morning ritual, a cup of hot tea, two hours of quiet before beginning my day, meditative drumming — the intuitive message that came through was, ‘Your business is a model for the new work paradigm’.
I spent twenty-five years as an employee of several corporations. Although I was always sought to take on projects with deep meaning, I also often felt very pressured to work at an unsustainable pace.
Being honest, a good part of that pressure came from within. I held a strong desire to find myself through my achievements, to fill a giant hole of longing with external success.
And yet, it does feel right to acknowledge the influence of our modern work culture. The expectation was explicit in several workplaces, I was expected to be ‘on call’ whenever an email, text or phone message came through. At first, I complied and then slowly began to rebel.
That type of pressure, to make my employer’s needs the centerpiece of my life was no longer acceptable. I still struggle with this, even now as an entrepreneur.
I am actively working to release that part of myself that feels a need to immediately respond to every email, every social media notification. Hustle culture tells you productivity is king, launch, launch, launch.
