There is a patriarchal culture, a code of sorts that has even men who wouldn’t harass or abuse a woman themselves, look away when one of their ‘bros’ does it. It’s about upholding a system of power over, because it benefits most men and they’ve actively been taught and enculturated from a very young age that men are superior to women, they are stronger, smarter and more entitled. As a woman who has stood up assertively for herself since childhood, I experienced a huge amount of sexual harassment, in school, in the workplace and in public. There are absolutely some men for which a woman like me is a challenge, they get off on taking me down a notch, putting me in my place in front of their buddies. Don’t write about what you haven’t experienced.
