This is an example of taking data and interpreting it to prove your particular worldview. Earlier today, I spent 2 hours reading posts inside a women’s entrepreneurship group where black women and women of color were sharing their personal experiences with racism. It took me 2 HOURS to read a portion of their responses and that’s just one tiny social media group. The average age each of those women were called a racial expletive? About 9 years old. The average number of stories each one shared? 8–10 different incidences and that was just what they had the energy to type, some are so exhausted and suffering from continuous traumatic stress disorder, they couldn’t even bear to relive it again. I read stories of violence, police harassment, discrimination within school systems, in workplaces, walking down the street. Mothers terrified that their children might not come home from a bike ride or husbands from a jog.
Pull up the statistics on racial inequity in housing, employment, socioeconomic status, educational attainment, health or any other measure of a safe and secure life and you will find that people of color are far behind their white counterparts. These protests, this level of rage did not simply appear because of the death of George Floyd, it was the last straw and rightfully so.
It’s time to educate yourself about the true history of our country, how it was founded on the backs of black and brown slavery, sacrifice and oppression.
No justice, no peace is not only about the trial for the four officers, it’s about putting the entire system on trial.
