Well, as the power of attorney for my 92 year old grandmother, the expense of elderhood is immense. She pays 5 times what I do for monthly housing and dementia care, not to mention medical bills. She, unlike many women in her generation had a full-time career, working for 35 years as a teacher. She and my grandfather also saved and invested. Many did not and I can’t imagine they are living the luxury life. So yes for some and a strong no for many of our elderly. I wonder if we are thinking of it all wrong, instead of feeling like they somehow owe us something, what if we owe them for years of contribution?
