What’s the real purpose of celebrating your birthday?

Bevin Niemann-Cortez

Today is my birthday and truth be told, I’ve long had a nebulous relationship with the fanfare that often accompanies the anniversary of my emergence into this world.

Part of me enjoys hearing from those who love me and part of me thinks, what’s the big deal?

I’m not eight anymore. I’ve had the parties, the cakes, the presents — been there, done that.

One of my friends tells me, it’s important to celebrate this milestone. The older you get, the more each year means.

I totally get that perspective and every day, I wake up grateful to be here, to have the opportunity to contribute.

I’m also future oriented and hold a big picture view of life from a metaphysical perspective. One of the spiritual classes I took on karma and reincarnation changed my entire understanding of this experience we call being a human. They proposed (and there are many different philosophies) that we have somewhere around 800 lifetimes.

Just let that marinate for a moment. An average life expectancy of say, 60 years times 800 lifetimes = 48,000 years, 17 million days, 420 million hours or 2.5 billion minutes of living.

That doesn’t even include the length of time that your soul pauses in another dimension before incarnating again…
