When I learned of Bill Cosby’s arrest and the charges filed against him, I was devastated that a person I had viewed for most of my childhood as a loving, kind, empowering role model could be such a monster. But cognitive dissonance does not in any way excuse his behavior and I find it unconscionable that he was released on a technicality. This sends a terrible and ongoing message to victims of assault that their trauma does not matter, over a person’s reputation. While I’m sure for some people race was brought forward as a factor, I simply saw it as another powerful, rich man in Hollywood getting away with horrific behavior because of his stardom. And for his co-star to show her support for this? It demonstrates how other women are often to blame for covering up what women have experienced. I’m so sorry his victims are having to experience this re-wounding, we need and must do better!
