Member-only story
When opposite personality types meet
This morning, on the invitation of one of my coaching clients, I agreed to be a guest in a business networking group. As I walked in the room, I overheard two of the members talking about an upcoming trip to Africa, where they were planning a safari hunt. As I settled into my chair, I was regaled with the details of how much it costs to ship the head of a warthog for taxidermy back to the United States. Ahhh!
To clarify, I am a spirit animal caller with a deep connection to all sentient beings. While I haven’t gone completely vegan, I’m gradually shifting in that direction.
A voice within me shouted, Bevin, you are in the wrong place! I reminded myself of my 2020 affirmation: I am practicing radical acceptance of myself and others.
And here I am, in the practice arena…
The gentlemen turned to me (they were southern gentleman, one even took off his 10-gallon hat before shaking my hand and called me Miss). They nervously inquired if their conversation was making me uncomfortable. I shared that I grew up in ranching country with a stepfather who hunted, so while I personally choose not to hunt animals, I understand why some do.
When I felt the tension leave their bodies, I realized they genuinely didn’t want to offend.
