When’s the last time you took a sabbatical?
When you think about the term sabbatical, perhaps what comes to mind is a university professor taking six months off to research and write a book. Or, taking a ‘gap year’ to travel and explore before going off to college or when you become an empty nester.
Those sound amazing and I’m definitely holding space for a long sabbatical at some point in my career. However, you don’t have to leave everything behind for months at a time in order to renew and recharge.
I recently heard my wise friend Margaret Rode, a coach for those who run businesses from the heart, share about her own annual sabbatical, which inspired me to do the same.
Several years ago, when I was still an employee, I had a bank of paid vacation days I planned out judiciously. Now that I’m a full-time coach, writer and entrepreneur, it felt like time to have a conversation with my boss about getting some much-needed rest. My boss is amazingly understanding, by the way:)
I decided to start by taking one full week off — baby steps!
From December 21–29th, I will completely disconnect from email, social media, text and my business for personal rejuvenation. I’ve worked hard this year, given so much and now I choose to receive.
