Losing sight of your identity…

It’s a question we will ask over and over throughout our life — who am I?

We may ask it outright through a state of consciousness or seek answers when the inner search is less than obvious.

They say our ability to be self-aware sets us apart from all other species on our planet. I beg to differ, the animals and other natural elements I frequently interact with certainly have a knowing at a visceral level of their beingness.

What does set us apart, is our ability to use language in an attempt to describe our current state. We apply words, labels, and concepts to reach for the solid ground beneath us.

Yet, the ground keeps shifting. As soon as one idea seems to fit, another merges to take its place.

Let’s reflect on some of the identities I have embodied throughout my life:

Infant, child, teenager, adult.

Woman, sister, wife, daughter.

Artist, student, coach, writer, leader.

Country bumpkin, city dweller.

Dating, married, single.

Christian, atheist, spiritual seeker, child of God.

Highly sensitive person, empath, INFJ, starseed, indigo, shaman, healer, Druid.

Each of these concepts conjure up specific imagery, ideas we hold about what they mean for who we are in that moment. I actually believe labels are primarily used so others can attempt to understand us.

But how well do we really understand ourselves?

What do I know to be true about me?

Why do I have a sneaking suspicion that a simple word can never really encompass the essence of who I am at the deepest level?

When we ask, who am I, maybe what’s really being explored, is what’s important to me?

What does my heart and soul call out for?

Truthfully, usually the answer is, I don’t know. That answer is scary.

My ego wants certainty. Come on Bevin, choose something. Put on that comfortable sweater we already know fits.

But that sweater is so last year, not appropriate for this new time and space. I don’t even know the style trends here.

Perhaps it’s not necessary to define who I am — what if I shift my energy to just being?

Simply being the presence that I am right now. Letting my intrinsic nature flow out, whatever that may be, trusting my inner compass to guide and navigate.

Isn’t that the best we can ever do anyway?

At some point in our lives, most of us ask:

  • Why am I here?
  • What am I supposed to be doing?
  • How do I fit into my community, in the world?
  • What’s my greatest potential?

Imagine if those questions could be answered. Imagine knowing your life’s purpose so clearly you could state it boldly without hesitation in a few powerful words.

Getting clear about your soul mission streamlines your energy and focus so that you can make the difference you feel called to make. Living your soul mission is the greatest gift you have to give to others and, at the same time, is the path of your greatest lessons.

If you, or someone you know, is asking these crucial questions, consider joining us for Soul Mission, a unique weekend retreat taking place in Grapevine, Texas in February 2019. Learn more and register by Nov. 1 to receive early bird pricing…
