Why we fear looking within — it’s really not as scary as it seems…

For many years, I had absolutely no desire to do any inner work, actually I avoided it like the plague.

Told myself, I’m fine, I got this.

No need to stir up old memories, let it be ancient history.

It’s not usually until we experience a very dramatic or traumatic event in our life that we wonder — is there something I need to pay attention to?

Looking within can bring up fear, for sure, but also guilt, shame, sadness, anger and blame. So why in the world would you ever want to be introspective?

Why would you choose to reflect on how your past experiences have shaped your current reality?

I believe avoidance is about mourning the death of our identity.

This is who I know myself to be.

If I start digging around, questions will arise about who was I then? Why did I choose that action? Who do I want to be now?

And the persona that I’m comfortable and familiar with will cease to exist.

What will I do then?

Where will I find secure footing in the shifting sands of change?

I propose that it’s irrational to fear the loss of your identity. Why?

Because your identity has never been fixed. Every person you interact with, every conversation you hold, the books you read, the media you consume, the micro-experiences of your life, your successes, your failures, the pain, the laughter — are all constantly shaping your inner world view.

I believe we confuse identity with our values.

This is what I believe in, therefore this is who I am!

Values and beliefs are also created and shaped by our day-to-day experiences, yet identity is something different.

Values and beliefs are a response to the external world. What we think, feel, believe and take action on what’s outside of us. The playground of our ego.

Our identity is an inside job, entering the realm of our soul. It’s the inner view we hold about who we are. Our value, our worth, our gifts, our challenges, our place in this world, our deepest purpose for being here.

If we chose to believe that our soul came into this Earthly existence to learn and grow, then we readily accept and even embrace a continuous sculpting of our identity.

When we’re willing to separate our ego-based external behaviors and reactions from our internal soul worth, we transcend the mundane.

We gain clarity through a wider lens, the picture broadens and we now understand the reasons for the seasons of our life.

How do you go about making the shift?

Be willing to dive within?

How do you overcome the fear of losing your identity?

By realizing you have been and will always be an eternal child of God.

At some point in our lives, most of us ask:

  • Why am I here?
  • What am I supposed to be doing?
  • How do I fit into my community, in the world?
  • What’s my greatest potential?

Imagine if those questions could be answered. Imagine knowing your life’s purpose so clearly you could state it boldly without hesitation in a few powerful words.
