You don’t have to wait. This is so tone deaf and black people are so tired of white people dragging out the argument of well, every other culture had slavery. It completely negates their ancestor’s trauma IN THIS COUNTRY. And, their ongoing trauma because so many white people believe they are superior to blacks and people of color. The people storming the Capital were not an anomaly.
Stop parading out this old trope and acknowledge that most of our white ancestors actively engaged in owning other human beings. Once they were ‘freed’ most of our ancestors then continued to hold BIPOC back through official and unwritten policies and prejudices, which continue to this day.
Just because someone was born into a particular culture, does not make them immune to what is right and wrong, as evidenced by the number of white people who actively fought against slavery at the time. They were born in the culture as well, but were willing to put their life on the line so all human beings would have a chance to be treated with equal safety and respect.
Venerating slave owners simply because they founded this country is like venerating any modern dictator who practices ethnic cleansing. But, I suppose you turn a blind eye to that, as well…
